Job Context:
Harrow School is the founding member of the British Association of Boarding School Short Courses (BABSSCo), which hosts and runs English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Courses at 5 major independent schools throughout England: Dulwich, Harrow, Heathfield, Mill Hill & Rugby.
Harrow Summer School and Mill Hill Summer School cater for several hundred students of various nationalities. The vast majority of these, aged between 8 and 17 years, come on residential courses and live in the School’s Boarding Houses for the duration of their stay. Male and female students are accommodated separately.
Background To Role:
Harrow Summer School offers courses for international students aged 13-17 and ‘closed’ courses for students of the same nationality (mainly Japanese). Mill Hill Summer School caters for international students aged 8-12 years.
The basic pattern for all courses is that students attend lessons in English and additionally do sports, activities and excursions to places of interest. The daily care and supervision of the students is undertaken by Activities Staff. EFL teachers do not have to supervise activities outside scheduled lesson times, although they are welcome to participate as much as they feel able to.
The Director of Studies and at Harrow, the Assistant Director of Studies, are responsible for the team of EFL teachers and ensuring the smooth running of the academic aspect of all English Language Courses. They are overseen by the EFL Coordinator, who is responsible for year-round preparation for the academic side of the English Language Courses, including teacher recruitment.
The aim of our courses is primarily to develop and extend students’ listening and speaking skills. Lessons should be based on the activities in the students’ schedules to enable them to participate fully when outside the classroom and to benefit as much as possible from their stay in Britain.
Roles & Responsibilities:
- Planning lessons with aims and materials that are relevant to student age group, class level and the trips and activities scheduled outside class
- Focussing lessons on the development of speaking, listening and pronunciation skills and including a range of mostly student-centred interaction patterns within each class
- Delivering dynamic and effective lessons that maintain learner interest.
- Being punctual and fully prepared for all teaching sessions
- Relating well to other members of BABSSCo staff and responding positively to managerial feedback
- Working independently with minimal support
- Assisting with student assessment and placement testing
- Attending an Induction Session and participating in the Teacher Development Programme
- Meeting all administrative requirements of the courses including completing Weekly Overviews, Records of Work and a Class Register
- Writing Student Reports and attending an end of course Awards Ceremony and Farewell BBQ
- Attending observation feedback sessions and an end of contract appraisal and completing a feedback questionnaire
Basic Salary:
Salaries start at £21.14 per hour for certificate-level qualified teachers, with increments given for further qualifications, experience and length of service with BABSSCo. Teachers are paid for teaching breaks. The hourly wage includes time spent planning lessons, at teachers’ meetings and attending an Awards Ceremony and Farewell BBQ at the end of each course.
Hours of Work:
Courses are held over six weeks in the summer from the beginning of July. Teachers may work for all or part of this period, depending on availability and course requirements.
International courses at Harrow Summer School have an average of 20 teaching hours per week (including break times) and those at Mill Hill 17.5 hours per week. Closed courses may vary. Lessons are scheduled over 5 or 6 days per week and generally take place during the morning, although there are occasionally afternoon and evening lessons. Schedules are sent to teachers along with their contracts.
Holiday Entitlement:
Payment in lieu of holiday is in included in the salary for this position. Holiday must not be taken during the period of employment.
