EFL Teacher Job Description
BABSSCo runs courses for two sets of international students: ‘A Course’ students, aged 8-12, taught at Mill Hill School, and ‘B Course’ students, aged 13-17, taught at Harrow School. As well as offering mixed nationality international courses, we also receive requests (mainly from Japan) for large numbers to come on 'closed' courses. Courses are held over six weeks in the summer from the beginning of July. Teachers may work for all or part of this period, depending on teacher availability and course requirements.
Teacher Profile
BABSSCo requires teachers to hold a certificate–level qualification (such as CELTA or Trinity TESOL), a first degree and have the standard of English of an educated native speaker. Teaching experience and a diploma level qualification (such as DELTA or Trinity Diploma) are highly desirable. In exceptional circumstances, applications from teachers lacking a first degree may be considered.
Main Roles and Responsibilities
Teaching Responsibilities
Teachers are expected to be able to create an atmosphere that is conducive to learning and to plan and execute lessons that are stimulating and relevant to students' ages, needs and interests. Teaching hours are broken down into classroom sessions, language activity sessions, course diary/class project sessions and fieldwork. Although teachers on BABSSCo courses do not have to organise activities for their students outside their teaching commitments, we do ask you to take an interest in the whole schedule and to offer appropriate pre-teaching/input in preceding lessons to help the students enjoy all their activities. If you are teaching the A Course students, you may be required to assist with occasional trips.
Each student is given a course book according to his or her English level but the teacher is free to use and adapt the book to suit the class and his or her own teaching style. Our own resources are extensive and teachers are encouraged to use these to supplement the course book. However, if a teacher chooses to use other material and not a course book, this is fine and then students are given, for example, a dictionary or a reader to take home instead. Further detailed information about lesson planning and content as well as all other aspects of the courses will be sent out in advance to teachers.
Teachers are expected to be able to create an atmosphere that is conducive to learning and to plan and execute lessons that are stimulating and relevant to students' ages, needs and interests. We want our teachers to be inventive and progressive in their ideas. The ability to work in a team is essential.
Course Aims
The aim of our courses is primarily to develop and extend students' listening and speaking skills. Lessons should be based on the activities in the students' schedules to enable them to participate fully when outside the classroom and to benefit as much as possible from their stay in Britain.
Classes
Class sizes are a maximum of 16 students but generally speaking average at 10 per class. Teachers have their own class for the duration of the course, although some team teaching may be arranged. You may like to combine with another teacher for language activities or fieldwork.
Lesson Plans
It is not necessary to produce detailed weekly lessons plans in advance, as we expect teachers to monitor students closely and to adapt lessons according to their needs. However, you do need to produce weekly aims and objectives that are relevant for your course and to discuss these with the DOS. Daily lesson plans do not have to be very detailed but must reflect your aims and objectives.
Testing
All teachers are involved in the entry testing procedure. For A Course students this means a grammar/ vocabulary test and an oral interview, and for B Course students a grammar/vocabulary test and listening test.
Course Induction
For all teachers employed there will be a compulsory pre-course induction/workshop session for which you will be paid.
